The following is a summary of developments in nonfinancial private sector debt in the third quarter of 2021:

  • In the third quarter of 2021, there was an increase of about NIS 30 billion (2.9 percent) in the balance of business sector debt, mainly through net debt raised through bank loans and tradable bonds in Israel.
  • The balance of households’ housing debt continued to increase, by about NIS 17 billion (3.8 percent) in the third quarter.  The increase was mainly due to an increase in the volume of new mortgages taken out from the banks.
  • The balance of nonhousing debt continued to increase, by about 2.5 percent, similar to growth in the previous quarter.  This followed a decline in the balance in 2020 in view of the COVID-19 crisis.
