Accessibility of Banking Services for the Disabled

The Bank of Israel announces today that in March 2007 the Supervisor of Banks, Rony Hizkiyahu, instructed the banks to prepare themselves for the full implementation of Amendment 2 to the Law for Equal Rights for the Disabled (5765-2005), which deals with the prohibition of discrimination of, and the guarantee of access for the disabled. According to the Supervisor's instructions, the banking corporations must meet the deadlines as set by the legislation for allowing the disabled to enter, move around, access and enjoy the full range of services as offered by the banking system. These instructions reflect the great importance that the Supervisor and the Banking Supervision place on the subject of equal rights for the disabled in general and the accessibility of banking services in particular.
In March 2005 the Knesset passed Amendment 2 to the Law for Equal Rights for the Disabled (5765-2005), which deals with the prohibition of discrimination and the guarantee of accessibility. According to this amendment, the banking system––as a supplier of public services––is obliged to provide the disabled with full access to the range of services it supplies, through making arrangements and adjustments, including the installation of aids or the provision of customized services.
